The government threw a lavish party at Diriyah Palace, where Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, held the conference. Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conducted high-level talks in Riyadh that focused on resolving the current conflict in Ukraine and enhancing ties between the two countries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that any result from the negotiations without Ukraine's participation would be unacceptable, raising concerns in Kyiv and among European allies about the lack of Ukrainian officials attending the summit. With its enormous economic resources, religious significance, and advantageous geopolitical location, Saudi Arabia has long been a major force in the Middle East, influencing both regional and international politics.

The Kingdom has carried out a number of diplomatic measures throughout the years to promote cooperation, economic ties, and stability with both international and neighbouring actors. In response to changing global dynamics, Saudi Arabia has made considerable changes to its diplomatic operations, placing a greater emphasis on multilateral participation, regional security, and economic diversification.

We would be more than glad to work with you and with President Trump and his administration,” the crown prince said Monday night while meeting U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “I believe you can work with us, Saudi Arabia, and for many countries around the world.”

Prince Mohammed's fingerprints were firmly placed on the proceedings when the state-run Saudi Press Agency announced at the start of the summit that talks between Russia and the United States are taking place in Riyadh "upon directives from" the royal as "part of the kingdom's ongoing efforts to promote global security and peace." In order to facilitate peace negotiations and investigate post-war economic prospects, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio decided to form a high-level delegation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised the notable absence of Ukrainian delegates from these talks, stressing the importance of Ukraine's participation in any future negotiations. Implications for US-Saudi Relations Saudi Arabia's diplomatic initiatives reflect a nuanced approach to its foreign policy, seeking to maintain strong ties with the US while expanding relationships with other global powers. This strategy indicates a shift towards a more multipolar foreign policy, where Saudi Arabia engages with multiple nations to safeguard its national interests. While the US remains a crucial ally, the kingdom's outreach to countries like China and Russia suggests a desire for a more balanced set of international partnerships. The US-Russia summit is being hosted by Saudi Arabia as part of a larger plan to balance ties with China and other key world powers. A major diplomatic move to strengthen strategic and commercial ties between Saudi Arabia and China was made in December 2022 when Chinese President Xi Jinping travelled to Riyadh. Saudi Arabia's intention to broaden its global alliances beyond its conventional relationship with the West was emphasised by this visit.

In conclusion

Saudi Arabia has emerged as a prominent player in international diplomacy, as seen by its hosting of the US-Russia summit in Riyadh. The monarchy is redefining its place on the international scene by promoting communication amongst superpowers and maintaining a balance in its connections with the US, China, and Russia. In addition to improving Saudi Arabia's reputation abroad, this strategic diplomacy supports larger initiatives to settle difficult international disputes.
