The Odisha government has initiated a high-level inquiry into the recent crisis at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, following the alleged suicide of Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech (Computer Science) student from Nepal. The tragic incident led to widespread protests on campus, culminating in the sudden eviction of over 500 Nepalese students. They were reportedly dropped at Cuttack railway station, about 30 km from the university, prompting concerns over the handling of the situation.
Government Response and Investigation
In response to the growing outcry, the state government has formed a three-member committee to examine the circumstances leading to Lamsal’s death, allegations of misconduct by university authorities, and the controversial decision to indefinitely shut down the institute for a specific group of students. Officials have been instructed to trace the evicted students, offer psychological support to those affected, and ensure their safe return to campus.
Public Outrage and Political Repercussions
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the issue being raised in the Odisha Assembly. Lawmakers across party lines have demanded the arrest of KIIT’s founder, Achyuta Samanta, and strict action against the institute for its treatment of foreign students. State Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj expressed concerns over why only Nepalese students were targeted and why such a drastic step was taken without consulting the Higher Education Department.
Legal and Diplomatic Dimensions
Odisha Police have registered two cases—one related to the alleged suicide based on a complaint from the student’s family and another regarding social media footage that reportedly shows security personnel and university staff physically assaulting protesting students. Meanwhile, Nepal’s Ministry of Education has warned that it may reconsider issuing no-objection certificates (NOCs) for students seeking admission to institutions in Odisha if the matter is not resolved fairly. The Nepalese government is also engaging in diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety and academic continuity of its students.
Moving Forward
KIIT has been directed to provide regular updates on the situation and ensure a safe environment for returning students. Authorities have also been urged to adopt a sensitive approach, avoiding any retaliatory actions against students who participated in the protests. While a section of Nepalese students has returned, many remain scattered across Odisha and beyond, with some en route to Nepal.
This incident raises critical questions about the treatment of international students, the accountability of private universities, and the responsibility of educational institutions in handling crises. As investigations unfold, all eyes are on the Odisha government’s actions to ensure justice, accountability, and a safe academic environment for students.
